KNVB and Netherlands say goodbye to conditioning chief René Wormhoudt

The Dutch football association (KNVB) announced on Thursday that René Wormhoudt will leave his role as strength and conditioning coach after fourteen years with the Netherlands national team, during which he was present at three World Cups and two European Championships.

The KNVB confirmed the decision through its official communication channels on Thursday.

Wormhoudt served as the strength and conditioning coach, travelling with the Netherlands to three World Cups and two European Championships.

Earlier this year he told the association he would step down after the 2026 World Cup, a plan now being formalised.

"It has been a huge honour to have been part of the Netherlands team for fourteen years," Wormhoudt said on the KNVB website. He expressed his feelings on the association’s site.

"I look back with pride and gratitude on the special moments with players, national team managers and staff. I thank the performance and medical staff, all other staff members and colleagues with whom I have worked over the years. The Netherlands will always hold a special place in my heart," he added.

Director of top football Nigel de Jong praised Wormhoudt, stating, "René has dedicated fourteen years with great commitment to the Netherlands. Being part of the technical staff under several national team managers reflects the appreciation for his knowledge, qualities and way of working. We thank René for everything he has meant to the team and wish him success in the future."
