Federico Chiesa's Liverpool exit leaves Iraola with a squad puzzle

🇬🇧

Liverpool have informed Federico Chiesa he must find a new club before the 2025-26 season, £10m and £15m despite limited first-team opportunities under Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola.

Chiesa, 28, has made sporadic appearances for Liverpool since his arrival, often featuring as a winger but never securing a consistent role in the starting XI. His lack of game time has frustrated supporters who recall standout performances when he has featured, including in deeper midfield positions.

The decision to release Chiesa now reflects Liverpool’s broader squad overhaul under Fenway Sports Group. With Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konaté and Andy Robertson all set to leave for free, new signings are required to refresh the squad ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Liverpool’s pre-season under Iraola will be pivotal, with every player under scrutiny as the manager assesses his options. Players like Trey Nyoni and Harvey Elliott could be handed greater responsibility if they impress during preparation.

Chiesa’s future remains uncertain despite interest from Italian clubs including Juventus, Como and Inter Milan. The winger has reiterated his desire for regular first-team minutes, a demand that has gone unmet during two years at Anfield.

Iraola faces a tactical dilemma: whether to retain Chiesa for pre-season to provide cover in attack or prioritise younger alternatives. Chiesa’s versatility—having played across the frontline—could offer flexibility, but his injury history remains a concern.

Football Insider’s report states Chiesa is weighing up offers while Liverpool push for a swift resolution. The club’s valuation of £10m–£15m suggests they are prepared to accept a loss on the player’s original £40m acquisition fee.

Liverpool’s squad rebuild continues to gather pace, with multiple departures and arrivals expected. Chiesa’s exit, though financially modest, underscores the scale of change under Iraola’s leadership.

The Italy international’s next move will depend on negotiations in the coming weeks, with clubs monitoring Liverpool’s pre-season preparations closely.
