Ecuador's World Cup exit leaves Arsenal defender facing suspension
Ecuador's 2‑0 loss to Mexico on Tuesday night confirmed their exit from the 2026 World Cup at the last‑32 stage. The defeat also saw Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie become the tournament’s third Arsenal player to be sent off.
Mexico secured a 2‑0 victory over Ecuador, sealing the South American side’s elimination. The result ended Ecuador’s campaign in the knockout round of the 2026 tournament.
In the final minutes, Hincapie was shown a red card after covering his mouth during a confrontation with Santiago Gimenez. Covering the mouth is now classified as a red‑card offence.
The referee did not see the incident, but Mexico players flagged the infraction. VAR then recommended a review, which resulted in the dismissal.

By the time the review was completed, Ecuador were already trailing 2‑0 with only seconds remaining. The late red card could not alter the outcome of the match. Hincapie will serve his suspension in Ecuador’s next competitive fixtures, though those competitions are not imminent. Qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup will not begin for at least a year, and Copa America is scheduled for 2028.Mexico's early surge sets tone as Ecuador seeks comeback in World Cup clash
Ecuador’s upcoming autumn international windows consist of friendly matches, meaning Hincapie remains eligible for those games. His club, Arsenal, will also have him available for the start of pre‑season, alongside fellow eliminated players Kai Havertz of Germany and Viktor Gyokeres of Sweden. The first Arsenal friendly against Girona is set for over a month from now, giving the players ample time for summer holidays. Arsenal hope Hincapie has learned from the incident and avoids repeating it at club level.
