Dutch trio shut Instagram after World Cup hate flood

🇬🇧

Three Netherlands internationals – Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville – have disabled comments on their Instagram accounts after receiving hateful and racist messages following their missed penalties in the World Cup round‑of‑16 shootout against Morocco on Tuesday night.

The three players each stepped up in the shootout but failed to convert their spot‑kicks, contributing to the Netherlands' early exit from the tournament. The miss sealed the Dutch side's defeat in the round of 16, ending their World Cup campaign.

Summerville was named in the starting eleven, while Kluivert and Timber entered the match from the bench. All three bore responsibility for the penalty kicks despite their differing minutes on the pitch.

Kluivert is contracted to West Ham United, Timber to AFC Bournemouth and Summerville to Olympique de Marseille. Their club affiliations were highlighted as the players reacted to the online abuse.

The trio were inundated with hateful and even racist remarks, not only from Dutch supporters but also from viewers abroad. The backlash intensified after the penalty miss, prompting the players to take action on social media.

In response, each player turned off the comment feature on their Instagram posts to prevent further abuse. The decision underscores the growing concern over toxic online environments for high‑profile athletes.
