Basel snatch 19‑year‑old Akpe Victory, leaving Rangers scrambling
Rangers Football Club face a pressing defensive void as they aimed to add a towering centre‑back to their summer rebuild. The 19‑year‑old Akpe Victory, a 1.95 m, 6‑ft‑5‑in defender, fits the physical profile Derek McInnes seeks, but Basel’s €5 million deal leaves the Ibrox side empty‑handed.
Italian transfer specialist Rudy Galetti announced on X on 3 July that FC Basel had completed intensive negotiations to secure Victory’s signature. The move was confirmed when the teenager said his goodbyes in Hungary and boarded a flight to Switzerland to finalise the switch.
Zalaegerszeg held firm on a €5 million valuation for the defender, and Basel structured a financial package that satisfied the Hungarian club. The deal closes a gap in Basel’s back line while denying Rangers their targeted acquisition.
A number of clubs had been tracking Victory, including Benfica, Strasbourg and Kilmarnock, where Derek McInnes was keen to lure the powerhouse to the Scottish Premiership. The interest underscored the defender’s appeal across Europe.
Victory arrived in Hungary from the Lithuanian side Banga Gargzdai during the winter window and adapted instantly to the Hungarian league. His quick acclimation highlighted his potential to thrive in more physically demanding leagues.
In the Hungarian top flight he logged 13 appearances and 876 minutes, scoring against Diosgyori VTK and providing an assist. That blend of raw recovery pace and progressive passing is exactly what McInnes craves for a disciplined defensive backline.
For Rangers, the loss represents a significant blow during a crucial summer squad rebuild, as overpaying for an unpolished teenager would have wrecked the budget needed for general squad depth. The recruitment team must now pivot toward cheaper markets in Scandinavia or explore the English Premier League loan market.
With the €5 million target now out of reach, Rangers will need to identify alternative options quickly to shore up their defence before the new season begins.
