After Manchester Utd setback, Atalanta eyes Ederson renewal
After Manchester United's failed bid, Serie A club Atalanta, known as La Dea, have turned their attention to retaining Brazilian midfielder Ederson, whose contract runs until 2027, as they aim to fill the midfield void left by a departing star and stabilise the squad for the coming season.
The proposed transfer to Manchester Utd collapsed, possibly because of medical concerns, which has rattled La Dea’s market plans. L’Eco Di Bergamo reported that the failed deal has turned Atalanta’s strategy upside down. The setback has forced the Italian side to reassess its summer targets.
Newcastle United have been cited as a potential suitor for the Brazilian midfielder. With the United move falling through, Atalanta now views Ederson’s continued presence as a realistic option.
Discussions with Ederson’s entourage are underway about a new contract, as his current deal expires in 2027. Atalanta is considering a one‑year bridge renewal to protect his market value. Such a short‑term agreement would also facilitate a potential sale in 2027.
Retaining Ederson would allow Atalanta to look to offload other high‑profile players this summer, freeing up resources. The club hopes the bridge contract will preserve his value for a future transfer. Kaustubh Pandey of GIFN noted the shift in Atalanta’s plans following the United collapse.
