Uruguay name WM squad omitting Luis Suarez including Rodrigo Zalazar
Uruguay named their FIFA World Cup squad on Tuesday. Marcelo Bielsa excluded former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez.
Rodrigo Zalazar, a midfielder who played in Germany’s Bundesliga, is included. The 28-year-old joins 25 other players in the 26-man squad.
Bielsa’s omission of Suarez, 37, ends the striker’s international career. Uruguay’s all-time top scorer with 68 goals, Suarez last featured for his country in 2022.
The squad includes only one player aged 39: veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Muslera, capped 137 times, returns for his fifth World Cup.
Defender José María Giménez and midfielder Federico Valverde are also in the squad. Both are key figures under Bielsa’s leadership.
Uruguay will begin their World Cup campaign against France on November 24 in Group H.
