Mares' MLS move looms as Montreal eyes Dutch midfielder

Dutch midfielder Luc Mares, 29, is on the brink of a Major League Soccer move as CF Montréal intensifies interest. The former Fortuna Sittard and MVV player, who logged 121 appearances for MVV before a stint in Norway, could soon cross the Atlantic.

Mares featured in 121 matches for MVV in the Dutch Eerste Divisie. After leaving MVV he transferred to Norway, initially joining IK Start before moving on to HamKam.

His time at HamKam placed him on the radar of CF Montréal. The Canadian club first identified the midfielder during his spell in Norway.

Last winter Montréal made several attempts to sign Mares, including an ultimate offer of six hundred thousand. HamKam rejected the bid, leaving the player and club reportedly at odds.

Now Montréal has renewed its pursuit, and according to reports HamKam has room to let the midfielder depart. The club appears willing to negotiate a transfer.

CF Montréal currently sit eleventh in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. The league resumes on 17 July, and on 30 August Montréal will travel to face Inter Miami CF, led by Lionel Messi, should Mares' transfer be completed.
