Ceballos exits Real Madrid after nine years: what went wrong?
Real Madrid have confirmed a mutual termination of Dani Ceballos’ contract, ending his nine-year association with the club. The 29-year-old Spanish midfielder leaves as a free agent after terminating a deal that still had one year remaining.
The termination follows a period of limited playing time for Ceballos at the Santiago Bernabéu. After joining from Real Betis in 2017, he made 215 appearances and won 16 titles, including three Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles. However, his final two seasons saw him feature sparingly, particularly after a reported falling out with club legend Álvaro Arbeloa.
Ceballos’ time at Real Madrid was marked by highs and lows. Despite flashes of quality, he struggled to secure a consistent starting role. His first two seasons were largely spent on the bench before a two-year loan to Arsenal in 2019. Upon returning, Carlo Ancelotti convinced him to stay, but regularity remained elusive.
Now a free agent, Ceballos is expected to rejoin Real Betis, his boyhood club. The move would reunite him with the Verdiblancos after his initial departure in 2017. His departure marks the end of a chapter that began with immense promise but ultimately fell short of expectations.
“Real Madrid CF and Dani Ceballos have decided, by mutual agreement, to end his time as a player for our club,” read the club’s official statement. The club thanked Ceballos for his commitment and wished him and his family well in their next steps.
