Thomas Tuchel hails respectful Mexican welcome ahead of World Cup tie
England manager Thomas Tuchel praised the warm reception his squad received upon landing in Mexico City ahead of Monday’s World Cup 2026 last‑16 clash with Mexico. He said the atmosphere at the hotel has been friendly and respectful despite FIFA’s heightened security measures.
Earlier in the tournament Ecuador lodged a complaint with FIFA over the noise generated by Mexican fans outside their hotel. The supporters blared music, revved motorbikes and honked horns into the early hours before the round‑of‑32 game.
To prevent a repeat of such disruption for England, FIFA deployed additional security. Members of Mexico’s National Guard lined the entrance to England’s hotel while police officers in riot gear patrolled the perimeter.

Tuchel dismissed the security concerns, noting that his team has been treated with respect since arrival. He described the reception as “friendly and respectful” and said no issues have arisen. “We had no issues tonight and I think FIFA took care of the situation,” Tuchel said. “We have security around the hotel so we expect a good night’s sleep, and if problems arise we will accept them calmly.” Since touching down in Mexico City, Tuchel has overseen England’s training sessions. The Three Lions will meet Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium, where a hostile crowd is expected to cheer the home side. “This will be a proper World Cup match,” Tuchel added. “We are in an iconic stadium, a massive knockout game, and the setting makes you sharper and brings the best out of you.”
