Oxford Kent faces long lay‑off after ACL blow, signing sidelined
Frankie Kent, Oxford United’s recent defender signing, will miss the majority of the upcoming season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a pre‑season training session. The 30‑year‑old’s operation was successful, but the setback means Oxford Kent faces a long lay‑off.
Kent completed his move to the Kassam Stadium at the end of June, arriving as a free agent after spells with Hearts, Peterborough United and Colchester United. The transfer was confirmed with a [Getty Images] photograph of the signing.
The club announced that the defender suffered the ACL injury in a pre‑season training drill and has since undergone a successful operation. Medical staff reported the procedure went smoothly.
Oxford United confirmed the injury will keep Kent out for most of the campaign, effectively ending his debut season with the team. The club’s medical team expects a lengthy rehabilitation period.
Kent was Oxford’s only summer signing before the English Football League imposed a transfer embargo on the club earlier this month. The embargo limits Oxford United’s ability to add further players this season.
The U’s squad and head coach Aaron Ramsey are currently training in Spain as they step up preparations for the new League One season. The team hopes the overseas camp will compensate for the loss of their new defender.
One of the first competitive tests will be an EFL Cup tie against Leyton Orient on 8 August, followed a week later by a League One home match against MK Dons. These fixtures mark the start of Oxford United’s campaign.
Oxford chairman has issued an apology over the transfer embargo, acknowledging its impact on the club’s recruitment strategy. The statement came as the club prepares for the upcoming fixtures.
