Strasbourg bets on Hugo Oliveira's modern vision with three‑year deal
RC Strasbourg Alsace announced on Sunday that Portuguese coach Hugo Oliveira has signed a three‑year contract to become the club’s new manager, replacing Gary O’Neil who departed for Ipswich Town in Ligue 1.
The club assessed several candidates before opting for Oliveira over former Celtic player Wilfried Nancy. Officials said his attacking intent, modern possession‑based philosophy and high‑pressing tactics aligned with Strasbourg’s ambitions. The appointment marks a fresh direction for the Alsatian side after Gary O’Neil’s departure.
Oliveira arrives from FC Famalicão, where he has been in charge since December 2024. He guided the Portuguese side to a fifth‑place finish in the Primeira Liga last season. During his 57‑match spell he recorded 24 wins, 16 draws and 17 losses.
Strasbourg’s €2m gamble: Hugo Oliveira hired to replace O’Neil
Before joining Famalicão, Oliveira served as an assistant to Marco Silva. Silva’s résumé includes managerial stints at Hull City, Watford and Everton. That experience is cited as part of Oliveira’s tactical development. The three‑year deal was confirmed by RCSA in a statement reported by Léo Aschi. Strasbourg expects Oliveira’s modern vision to overhaul the Alsatian side’s playing style. For Oliveira, the move offers a new challenge in Ligue 1.
