Míchel pushed limits to hijack PSV deal for Mijnans at last moment
PSV signed Sven Mijnans from AZ on Monday after coach Míchel went to ‘extreme lengths’ to hijack the deal in the final hours.
According to PSV follower Rik Elfrink of the Eindhovens Dagblad, Míchel was determined to pull the midfielder away from Eindhoven even at the last moment. The move was ultimately unsuccessful, with Mijnans completing his switch to PSV on a contract running until mid-2031.
Elfrink states that Ajax had been highly interested in Mijnans before he committed to PSV. The Spanish coach’s aggressive pursuit failed to sway the player, who chose Eindhoven over Amsterdam. PSV’s participation in Champions League football was cited as a key factor in Mijnans’ decision.
Beyond European competition, Mijnans also felt a strong connection to PSV, where the club had pursued him for an extended period. “He had a good feeling about PSV and saw the club as the route to his next career step,” Elfrink explains.
Interest from Germany also featured in the negotiations, but Mijnans ultimately chose PSV. The Eindhoven club paid thirteen million euros for the AZ player. Elfrink does not disclose the specifics of how far Míchel went in his attempt to lure Mijnans away.
The revelation of Ajax’s interest reportedly unsettled Mijnans’ camp, adding further pressure to the final stages of the deal. PSV’s move now sees Mijnans join a club competing in Europe’s premier club competition while securing his long-term future.
