Marseille’s summer plan: slash wages before Genesio can buy

🇫🇷

Olympique de Marseille will prioritise player sales this summer before Bruno Genesio can reinforce his squad, as the club works within DNCG‑imposed financial limits. The wage bill sits near €160 million and must be trimmed below €100 million. Genesio was officially appointed on Wednesday, but his first transfer window is expected to be dominated by departures.

Olympique de Marseille have notified the DNCG that substantial player sales will be pursued throughout the summer to achieve the required wage reduction. The club’s current wage commitments approach €160 million, well above the €100 million ceiling set by the regulator.

Sporting director Grégory Lorenzi has already circulated a list of players to agents to facilitate exits. The list targets key members of the squad whose departures would significantly lower the payroll.

Among the names earmarked for sale are Ulisses Garcia, Amine Harit, Neal Maupay, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Pierre‑Emerick Aubameyang. Each of these players occupies a substantial portion of the club’s wage structure.

Pierre‑Emerick Aubameyang, the 37‑year‑old Gabon international, has attracted interest from clubs in Turkey, Major League Soccer, Saudi Arabia and Spain. Marseille have not ruled out retaining him under Genesio if no satisfactory offer materialises.

Given the financial imperative, the upcoming transfer window is expected to be characterised more by departures than arrivals. Any future signings will depend on the club’s ability to bring the wage bill below the €100 million threshold.
