Manchester City’s defence hinges on keeping Ruben Dias
Manchester City have confirmed they will not sell centre‑back Ruben Dias despite reported interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea, club’s stance makes it clear the Portuguese international is not for sale this summer.
Nathan Ake completed a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce, while John Stones left after his contract was not renewed. Their departures remove two experienced defenders from the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. Bernardo Silva also departed, adding to the exodus of experienced players.
Ruben Dias, the most experienced defender in the squad, is expected to provide the leadership and presence that Pep Guardiola’s side lacked after the exits. Under new manager Enzo Maresca, Dias’ intangibles will be crucial for City’s defensive stability.
Josko Gvardiol, Abdukodir Khusanov, Marc Guehi and Vitor Reis will all vie for a starting berth alongside Dias. Nevertheless, the Portuguese centre‑back’s experience remains a key asset for the team.
Graeme Bailey City have turned down enquiries from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea for Dias. The club views him as one of the foundations of Maresca’s squad and will not entertain offers.
Retaining Dias means Manchester City will avoid a leadership void in defence and can build around his qualities for the upcoming season. Suprised suitors will need to look elsewhere as City’s back line remains anchored by their Portuguese international.
