Liverpool’s defensive rebuild hinges on Jacquet’s £55m signing
Liverpool have secured French centre‑back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for an initial £55 million, signing him to a five‑year deal with a sixth‑year option as they look to replace Ibrahima Konate, who departed on a free to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
The departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid left Liverpool with a void in their central defence. Compounding the problem, centre‑back Giovanni Leoni suffered a cruciate ligament injury on his debut against Southampton in September.
Jeremy Jacquet, the 20‑year‑old French defender, arrives from Rennes for an initial £55 million fee. The transfer agreement includes potential add‑ons of up to £5 million and a five‑year contract with an option for a sixth season.
Jacquet has been sidelined since February with a dislocated shoulder, but medical reports suggest he will be fit for the start of pre‑season. His recovery aligns with Liverpool’s need to have a full complement of centre‑backs for the upcoming campaign.
Learning from a legend: Jacquet on joining Van Dijk at Liverpool
Chelsea also pursued the Rennes prospect, yet Liverpool secured his signature in the winter window. The deal stipulated that Jacquet would remain at Rennes for the remainder of the season before joining Anfield. With Jacquet’s addition, Liverpool now have four centre‑backs: the newly arrived Frenchman, Giovanni Leoni, Joe Gomez and captain Virgil van Dijk. This depth aims to mitigate the impact of Leoni’s injury and provide competition for places. Liverpool’s summer activity already includes the £34 million acquisition of Spanish winger Victor Munoz. The club also tabled an £86 million package for RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, which ultimately did not materialise. Jacquet must complete his rehabilitation and adapt to Jurgen Klopp’s defensive system before the Premier League season begins. Should his integration prove swift, Liverpool will have addressed the immediate defensive shortfall created by Konate’s exit.
