Koeman's exit after World Cup flop puts Dutch future in doubt

🇳🇱
Ronald Koeman announced on Instagram that he will step down as coach of the Netherlands national team after the side’s round‑of‑16 defeat to Morocco on penalties at the World Cup. The Dutch side, which Koeman has overseen in 64 matches across two spells, exited the tournament early, ending the campaign that fell short of the semi‑final target. In his Instagram post, Ronald Koeman wrote, "We dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That did not happen, and no one is more disappointed than I." He added that, as the national coach, he bears full responsibility for the failure. The Netherlands were knocked out in the round of 16 after a penalty shootout loss to Morocco. The defeat marked the end of the tournament for the Dutch side. Koeman faced criticism for his substitution choices after the opening match against Japan, where defensive changes were blamed for conceding a late equaliser. His decision to begin the Morocco game with five defenders also attracted scrutiny for leaving the midfield under‑manned. Koeman defended his approach, stating that he would make the same defensive selections again and expressed no regret over the formation. He later dismissed the criticism, saying, "All of the Netherlands asked to play with five defenders. And then you get criticised – it doesn't matter to me." Technical director Nigel de Jong said the pre‑tournament objective had been a semi‑final and the ambition to become world champions. He noted that the team fell far short of that goal. Koeman also hinted at stepping away from coaching, reflecting on a career that gave him pride and gratitude while underscoring the importance of health. He thanked his wife Bartina for her daily support during her own illness, describing her strength as invaluable.
