KNVB files complaint against racist accounts, vows firm response

🇳🇱

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has filed a formal complaint against online accounts that posted racist remarks about the Dutch national team. The action, announced by KNVB chairman Frank Paauw, comes after recent reports of abusive content and underscores the federation’s zero‑tolerance policy.

Last week the KNVB reported several racist expressions to Meld.OnlineDiscriminatie.nl (MOD), the platform it works with for its anti‑discrimination campaign. Legal staff at the reporting point assess each submission to determine whether it breaches criminal law. If deemed punishable, they can pursue a range of actions, from contacting platforms to requesting account deletions.

The legal team can take actions that range from writing to platforms to asking for the removal of offending content or entire accounts. MOD has already secured the deletion of multiple expressions by a user identified as X. A request to delete an account containing the term “siegheil” is still pending.

Cases that meet the criteria for prosecution are now being forwarded by the KNVB to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (OM). The federation has already established contact with the OM regarding these matters. Individuals are also free to lodge complaints directly with the authorities.

On behalf of the KNVB, chairman Frank Paauw will submit the formal complaint to the OM. He stressed that, while it is impossible to catch every racist comment, the KNVB wants to send a clear message that crossing the line will have consequences. The federation’s dual‑track approach combines its own investigative capacity with the prosecutorial powers of the state.
