Genesio’s dilemma: Aubameyang’s future hangs in the balance at Marseille

🇫🇷

The clock ticked past midnight at the Stade Vélodrome, the floodlights casting long shadows across the empty stands. Inside, a single figure sat in the dim glow of a laptop screen, reviewing footage of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s latest training session. Bruno Genesio, Marseille’s new manager, had just finished watching the Gabonese forward glide through drills, his first real look at the player he may have to let go.

Olympique de Marseille are under austerity measures, and Aubameyang (37) was among the players they most wanted to offload. La Provence reported that, to shed his high salary, Marseille would accept less than €2 million for the forward. But Genesio, whose appointment was confirmed earlier this month, has now held direct talks with Aubameyang, Chelsea, and Barcelona striker, and discussions with Marseille’s hierarchy are already scheduled. The Gabonese international has been a polarising figure at the club, but his experience and goals remain valuable assets.

Corum FK’s rise adds urgency to the situation. The Turkish side, promoted to the top flight for next season, have emerged as serious contenders for Aubameyang’s signature. Corum’s representatives have already met with the player, reported Sacha Tavolieri, and an agreement in principle is reportedly in place. A deal would still require Corum to finalise terms with Marseille.

The MLS has also entered the frame. Onze Mondial understands that interest from the competition is being monitored closely. While Corum FK appear closest to securing Aubameyang, the MLS could yet force a late twist in the negotiations.

Aubameyang’s own stance remains unclear. At 37, he is no longer a first-choice striker in Europe’s top leagues, but his pedigree—championships in England, Spain, and France—still commands respect. Genesio’s decision will shape Marseille’s attacking future, whether by keeping the Gabonese marksman or replacing him with a younger option.

For Corum FK, the opportunity is tantalising. Promotion to Turkey’s top flight brings new challenges, and Aubameyang’s experience could provide the edge they need to avoid an immediate return to the second tier. The club’s hierarchy will now work to finalise terms with Marseille, but the Gabonese forward’s wage demands may yet prove a stumbling block.

Marseille’s hierarchy face a delicate balancing act. They need to reduce costs, but they also recognise the commercial and on-field value of a player like Aubameyang. Genesio’s preference to retain him complicates their plans, leaving the club to navigate a path that satisfies both financial and sporting objectives.

The coming days will determine Aubameyang’s next chapter. Whether he stays in France, moves to Turkey, or explores options across the Atlantic, one thing is certain: his next move will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike.
