From Al‑Nassr to Portugal: Jesus replaces Martinez as coach

🇵🇹 By 4All Football Editorial ·
While Cristiano Ronaldo ends his World Cup saga with a somber farewell, his former Al‑Nassr boss Jorge Jesus steps into the Portugal National Team role, tasked with rebuilding a side that stumbled in the round‑of‑16, following a disappointing performance that sparked debate about the veteran striker's minutes. Portugal have appointed Jorge Jesus as their new national team coach, following a disappointing performance at the World Cup that saw the side exit in the round‑of‑16. The 71‑year‑old, a veteran of Portuguese football, takes the helm after the federation parted ways with Roberto Martinez. Jesus brings extensive experience, having managed several prominent Portuguese clubs including Benfica and Sporting Lisbon. His most recent role was with Saudi Arabian club Al‑Nassr, where he coached Portugal’s star player, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese national team officially announced his arrival on X, stating: "A new journey begins today. Welcome to the National Team, Mister Jorge Jesus." Jorge Jesus was unveiled as the new Portugal boss on Friday (AP). The coaching change comes in the wake of significant debate surrounding Portugal’s World Cup campaign, particularly the role of 41‑year‑old Ronaldo. Fans and media widely questioned Martinez’s decision to give the veteran forward major minutes at striker, with many suggesting the team’s attack was overly focused on the aging scorer. Jesus, who described Ronaldo as a "symbol" of Portuguese sports, confirmed he plans to discuss the player’s future. "That’s a conversation we’re both going to have. What does he want to do for the future of his career?" Jesus told reporters at his presentation. Following Portugal’s World Cup exit earlier this week, Ronaldo said: "I've won three titles for Portugal; before Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal hadn't won a single title," he said. He added: "I'm sad to be leaving the World Cup like this... I’ll now have time to reflect and be with my family." Ronaldo remains under contract with Al‑Nassr until 2027 and has indicated the recent World Cup would be his last, though he has not formally retired from international play. He noted the 2016 European Championship remains as significant to him as a World Cup. Regardless of Ronaldo’s decision, Jesus inherits a squad rich in talent, particularly in midfield with players such as Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and João Neves. The Portuguese side looks to rebuild ahead of future tournaments.
