City’s strategic gamble: Enzo Maresca’s three‑year pledge to lead

🇬🇧
Enzo Maresca has signed a three‑year contract to become Manchester City’s head coach, a deal running until the summer of 2029 after his departure from Chelsea on New Year’s Day. Former captain Kyle Walker praised the appointment, calling it a clever decision for the club. City’s board pursued Maresca because he already knows the club’s philosophy, the ins and outs, and what it means to supporters, a point Walker highlighted in a recent interview. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano both voiced confidence in his managerial abilities. Maresca previously served as Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad coach in the 2020‑21 season, guiding the U21s to their first Premier League 2 title. He later returned as one of Pep Guardiola’s assistants for the historic 2022‑23 treble‑winning campaign, acting as a bridge between players and the manager, a role Walker described as crucial after Mikel Arteta’s departure to Arsenal. Walker, who moved to Burnley from Manchester City in 2025, also recalled Maresca’s abrupt exit from Chelsea despite winning the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, emphasizing that the Italian now has another chance at City. He said the manager has a good group of lads and that both parties must find balance to achieve bigger things. Maresca has already outlined ambitious summer transfer plans, following Manchester City’s £116 million capture of Elliot Anderson. He is linked with potential signings such as Chelsea’s Malo Gusto and Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi. His first match in charge is scheduled for August 1 against Inter Milan on a pre‑season tour of South Korea. The first competitive appearance will be the FA Community Shield versus Arsenal on August 16, with his Premier League debut set for August 23 against Bournemouth at the Etihad. For Manchester City, the appointment promises continuity and a manager intimately familiar with the club’s inner workings. For Maresca, it offers a platform to step out of an assistant role and aim to match the success achieved under Guardiola.
