Celtic's transfer silence fuels fan fury as O'Neill eyes overhaul
Celtic supporters are hitting a breaking point over the absence of new signings, as the club unveiled a third‑kit ‘stadium range’ on Thursday and fans flooded media demanding fresh faces. Interim chairman Brian Wilson pledged three weeks ago, shortly after Martin O'Neill’s confirmation as permanent manager, that Celtic would be “very active” in the market, a promise that remains unfulfilled.
All six of last season’s loan recruits have departed, and three out‑of‑contract players – goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, forward Kelechi Iheanacho and midfielder Alex Oxlade‑Chamberlain – have also left Celtic. These exits have stripped the squad of experienced depth across the pitch.
Further departures include Luis Palma, Stephen Welsh and Hayato Inamura, each of whom has secured a move to a new club. Their exits add to the turnover that the club must now address.
Key figures such as Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels are reported to be on the brink of leaving, while captain Callum McGregor could also be on the market. If any of these players depart, Celtic will face a significant loss of talent.
Martin O'Neill faces a pruning task that amounts to a major squad revamp, with almost every position flagged for reinforcement. The manager’s challenge is to rebuild a balanced roster while maintaining the momentum of the previous season.
Despite securing a league and Scottish Cup double last season, the current squad is described as crying out for higher quality. Supporters and analysts alike see the lack of new signings as a gap between achievement and ambition.
Celtic’s recent transfer windows have been described as patchy, often culminating in a late scramble as the deadline approaches. The double triumph under O'Neill temporarily eased tensions between fans and the board, yet discontent is resurfacing as the transfer inactivity persists.
