Atlético Madrid lands Grimaldo in $28m homecoming for Spain
Alejandro Grimaldo has completed his move to Atlético Madrid, signing a contract that runs until June 2030. The 30‑year‑old Spanish left‑back joins the La Liga side from Bayer Leverkusen, with a reported fee of $25 million rising to $28.5 million in the summer window.
Atlético Madrid announced the agreement on Tuesday, confirming the four‑year deal. The club highlighted Grimaldo’s versatility, noting he can also operate as a wing‑back, central or attacking midfielder.
Grimaldo progressed through the youth ranks of Atlético Vallbonense, Valencia and Barcelona before moving to Benfica in Portugal. He rose to prominence with the Portuguese side before transferring to Bayer Leverkusen in 2023.
Araujo stays at Barcelona: captaincy still in sight after World Cup setback
At Bayer Leverkusen he featured in the historic Bundesliga and German Cup double in 2024. Across 145 appearances he recorded 30 goals and 45 assists. “He was undoubtedly a key part of our shared success,” Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said. “His style of play was a defining feature of our Werkself, and his free kicks were iconic.” Grimaldo, who has earned 14 caps for Spain, is part of the World Cup squad. However, coach Luis de la Fuente has preferred Marc Cucurella, now at Real Madrid, as the starting left‑back in the tournament. His arrival adds depth to Atlético Madrid’s defensive options as they chase La Liga ambitions. Spain will also have an experienced alternative on the left flank should injuries arise during the World Cup.
