Ajax’s fading Ceballos hopes meet Ounahi’s growing momentum
At 16:05 today Matteo Moretto reported that Ajax are counting less on the arrival of Dani Ceballos, while simultaneously noting that interest in Azzedine Ounahi is gathering speed. The contrast pits a fading free‑agent pursuit against a burgeoning alternative for the Amsterdammers.
The 29‑year‑old midfielder is a free agent after leaving Real Madrid and has attracted interest from several clubs. Ajax have adopted a hard‑headed approach, acknowledging that their confidence in securing Ceballos is waning.
Ceballos has been linked to Ajax for months, with Jordi Cruijff praising his play‑making abilities. Nevertheless, the Spaniard appears to favour a return to Real Betis, the club where he progressed through the youth system and broke into the first team.
On Tuesday Besiktas entered the race for the midfielder’s signature. Míchel reportedly phones Ceballos almost daily in an effort to persuade him to join Amsterdam, but the attempts have yet to succeed.
Ajax are therefore shifting cautiously toward alternatives as daily confidence in the Ceballos deal erodes. Fabrizio Romano disclosed last weekend that the club is pursuing Azzedine Ounahi, who impressed for Morocco at the World Cup.
Matteo Moretto now says Ounahi’s transfer to Amsterdam is gaining momentum. The midfielder’s profile appeals to everyone at the club and negotiations are progressing.
