World Cup fallout fuels Dutch coach hunt and German options
Fabrizio Romano announced on his YouTube channel that Ronald Koeman, former Barcelona manager, has left his role as head coach of the Netherlands after the World Cup round‑of‑32 defeat to Morocco, sparking an immediate search for his successor. The vacancy has already drawn attention to former Liverpool boss Arne Slot.
Romano clarified that Koeman’s exit was confirmed following the Dutch side’s loss to Morocco in the round of 32, ending his tenure that began after the 2022 World Cup. The Netherlands now joins a list of leading national teams actively searching for a new head coach.
Romano explained that such changes are typical after a major tournament. “As always happens after the World Cup, some giants go home and so it’s obvious to have some links, names, stories about managers.”

Germany suffered a shock exit against Paraguay, prompting speculation about the future of Julian Nagelsmann. “I would be open to staying. I’m not quitting. I’m staying and I would be happy to continue. I would be happy to plan for the Nations League, for the Euros.” Romano also noted that Jürgen Klopp could be considered for the German job if the federation decides to move on. “Don’t underestimate the possibility to see Klopp back in football as next coach of the German national team.” Arne Slot left Liverpool earlier this year, and his name has been widely discussed as a possible Dutch candidate despite Romano not mentioning him in the update. The Dutch Football Association’s search therefore remains open, with the vacancy ranking among Europe’s most coveted managerial posts. The managerial market is only just beginning to shift, as both the Netherlands and Germany evaluate their options in the wake of World Cup disappointments.
