Stoke's eight-figure bid forces Galbraith exit as Swansea cut ties

🇬🇧

Swansea City have accepted Stoke City's eight-figure offer for Northern Ireland midfielder Ethan Galbraith, with the 25‑year‑old set to undergo a medical in the Potteries on Tuesday. The transfer ends Galbraith's brief one‑year spell at the Welsh club after joining from Leyton Orient last summer.

Galbraith, a former Manchester United youngster, arrived at Swansea from Leyton Orient for a £1.5 million fee after two seasons with the London side. During his 44 appearances for the Swans he scored four goals, often deployed on the right flank of defence despite preferring midfield.

Swansea had been eager to offer Galbraith a new long‑term contract this summer, but the player made clear he would not sign a fresh deal. His existing contract runs until 2028 with a club‑option for an additional twelve months, yet the club chose to sanction his exit rather than enforce the terms.

Head coach Vitor Matos had expressed in April that he hoped Galbraith would remain at Swansea for a decade, calling him a "really important player". The departure therefore represents a significant blow to Matos, given Galbraith's contribution last season.

Stoke City acquire a versatile midfielder capable of playing both centrally and at right‑back, adding depth to their squad. For Swansea City, the sale frees up resources but removes a player they regarded as key to their plans.
