Sheffield United chase stability: Poppy Soper fills goalkeeping void
Facing a shortage of experienced shot‑stoppers, Sheffield United moved quickly to bolster their goalkeeper ranks. The Blades secured 24‑year‑old Poppy Soper on a one‑year contract with an option for a further year, aiming to add depth and competition in the squad.
The signing was confirmed through an official club press release posted on WSL Full-Time earlier today. The announcement highlighted the club’s intent to reinforce the squad ahead of the new campaign.
Soper arrives from FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division side Rugby Borough. Her spell in the Northern Premier Division gave her regular game time and exposure to the English women's football system.
The goalkeeper’s résumé includes stints at Cardiff City, Plymouth Argyle, Chelsea, Charlton Athletic, Ipswich Town and Blackburn Rovers before joining Rugby Borough. Across seven clubs she has accumulated valuable experience at various levels of the women’s game.
Her most prolific period came in the 2025/2026 season when she featured consistently for Rugby Borough. Although she has been on the fringes of the Wales senior squad, she has yet to make her debut.
Head coach Stephen Healy said, “We’re really pleased to bring Poppy into the club. We wanted someone to come in who already has experience in this league but also has the capacity to both grow and challenge within our goalkeeper union.” He added that Soper has previously worked with Sian Rogers, providing a solid, established relationship as the Blades’ second signing of the summer window.
