Roberto Martínez exits Portugal after World Cup exit as successor lined up

Roberto Martínez announced his immediate departure from the Portuguese national team moments after the defeat. The coach confirmed his exit during a post-match press conference following the World Cup elimination.
Martínez, who also led Belgium and clubs including Everton and Swansea City, managed Portugal in 45 matches. His record stands at 32 wins, six draws, and seven losses. Under his guidance, Portugal claimed the Nations League title, defeating Spain on penalties in the final.
"This marks the end of a cycle. It is now important to have a new opportunity," Martínez said, "It is legitimate for the president to choose his own coach. I appreciate all the support I have received." He has been in charge since early 2023.

The 52-year-old’s tenure included a 32-6-7 record in 45 games. His only major trophy with Portugal came in the Nations League, where Spain were beaten in a shootout. His coaching career includes spells at Benfica, Fenerbahçe, Sporting CP, Al Hilal, Al Nassr, and Braga. Martínez’s exit follows Portugal’s World Cup exit to Spain in the round of 16. The only goal of the match came from Merino in stoppage time. Jesus, who turns 71 this year, has managed in Portugal, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. His appointment would mark a return to international management.
