Newcastle’s £42m gamble on Toure aims to fill Gordon’s void
Newcastle United have secured the signing of Ivory Coast international Bazoumana Toure, who impressed last term, for a reported £42 million fee from Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim. The 20‑year‑old winger arrives as the club’s second summer acquisition after goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen joined from Guingamp.
Newcastle turned to Toure to replace Anthony Gordon, who departed for FC Barcelona, leaving a senior left‑winger vacancy. The Magpies had previously pursued Spanish forward Victor Munoz, but Liverpool intervened, prompting the shift to Toure.
In the 2023‑24 Bundesliga season Toure recorded five goals and twelve assists, helping Hoffenheim secure a UEFA Europa League place. His metrics placed him above the 60th percentile among left wingers in Europe’s top seven leagues for goal involvements, dribbles, progressive carries, key passes and accurate crosses.
Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool were linked with Toure, yet none lodged a formal bid, allowing Newcastle to complete the transfer. The club’s willingness to invest reflects confidence in his potential to become a key attacking outlet.
Manager Eddie Howe described the arrival as an “exciting talent” with “a lot of potential to unlock”, underscoring the strategic intent behind the signing. Howe also indicated that further midfield signings are expected, naming Sandro Tonali’s possible move to Tottenham Hotspur and Bruno Guimaraes’ potential departure as upcoming targets.
For Toure, the move offers Premier League exposure and a platform to feature in the Ivory Coast squad that competed at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup. Newcastle gain a proven creator to rejuvenate their left flank and aim to improve their attacking options for the season ahead.
