Manchester United’s midfield hunt widens after summer misses
Manchester United are reshaping their midfield department after failing to land their primary targets this summer. The club’s focus on securing control, legs and quality in midfield has intensified, with multiple options now under consideration. The issue remains whether United can convert intent into the right deals at the right price, a challenge familiar to Old Trafford in recent years.
The most advanced pursuit is Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with a €40.5m initial deal reportedly still on track. The Brazil international was expected to join in July until his late call-up to Carlos Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the Nations League. Following Brazil’s round-of-16 exit to Norway on Sunday, a full medical is now anticipated.
United’s search has broadened significantly after losing out on Mateus Fernandes. Chelsea’s Andrey Santos has since emerged as a new target, alongside Aurelien Tchouameni and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. This suggests United are not limiting themselves to one profile but are instead surveying the market for quality, upside and availability.
The club’s financial discipline has been evident in their approach to Mateus Fernandes. Tottenham Hotspur completed an £85m deal with West Ham for Fernandes after United were unwilling to meet the guaranteed, fixed fee. The report notes United were prepared to match the £85m asking price through add-ons but drew the line at the upfront commitment. Tottenham’s salary offer was also deemed excessive by Old Trafford’s hierarchy.
Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham for a deal that could reach £100m further illustrates United’s reluctance to match inflated valuations. The club’s stance reflects a broader strategy to avoid vanity purchases and prioritise sustainable squad building.
Goalkeeper recruitment also remains fluid after Andre Onana’s season-long loan to Trabzonspor. United will receive a €1.5m loan fee based on the Turkish Super Lig club’s performances, with no option to buy included. The club is now exploring backup options, with Altay Bayindir expected to leave and 35-year-old Karl Darlow identified as a potential replacement.
The left wing has also become a priority, with Crysencio Summerville emerging as a target. Initial club-to-club talks have been held regarding the 24-year-old West Ham winger, who could provide the directness and consistency United lack in wide areas.
Ederson’s medical and one more midfielder remain the immediate priorities. The left wing situation must also be resolved if United are to address their squad gaps before the window closes. Execution, not ambition, will determine whether this summer’s reshaping succeeds.
