Liverpool’s midfield gamble: why Kaishu Sano could cost £52m

🇬🇧

Liverpool are showing strong interest in Mainz midfielder Kaishu Sano, a 25‑year‑old whose recent World Cup strike against Brazil has raised his profile. The Reds are prepared to meet the German club’s €50‑60 million valuation, roughly £43‑52 million, as they look to rebuild under Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool’s midfield faltered in the 2025/26 season after the title‑winning 2024/25 campaign, with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister failing to reach prior standards. Curtis Jones’ future is also uncertain after interest from Inter Milan, leaving a clear need for athleticism, control and durability in central areas.

Sano, who impressed in the Bundesliga, delivered a superb opener in the World Cup round of 32, capitalising on a loose Danilo pass before beating Casemiro and finishing low into the far corner at Houston Stadium. Japan eventually lost when Casemiro equalised and Gabriel Martinelli scored an injury‑time winner, but the Japanese midfielder’s performance highlighted his energy and ball‑winning quality.

He has two years remaining on his contract with Mainz, giving the club a strong negotiating position. Reports from Germany in March indicated Mainz would only consider a sale for €50‑60 million, a serious valuation for a player still developing at elite European level. Manchester United, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are also monitoring the Mainz midfielder.

Liverpool are also linked with other central midfield options such as Adam Wharton, Eduardo Camavinga and Alex Scott. Camavinga, who could be available in a similar €50‑60 million bracket, brings elite‑club experience that may suit Iraola’s immediate plans.

The Reds’ priority remains the right wing, having missed out on Yan Diomande while Paris Saint‑Germain have placed Bradley Barcola’s valuation at £116 million. The urgency is heightened by the recent departure of Arne Slot, whose exit left Iraola to oversee a rapid rebuild. Balancing these demands with a £52 million outlay for Sano means Liverpool must decide quickly, ensuring the signing fits the squad without compromising other transfer targets.
