De Zerbi backs Romero’s absence for Spurs-Everton clash

🇬🇧

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero will not feature in Sunday’s Premier League finale against Everton after the club confirmed he traveled to Argentina.

The Argentine defender, who has been sidelined since a knee injury sustained in the match against Sunderland, returned home despite Tottenham needing a point to secure safety. Romero attended Belgrano’s playoff final against River Plate, prompting criticism over his absence.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi defended Romero’s decision, stating the club’s medical staff approved the trip. De Zerbi emphasized that Romero’s presence would not alter the outcome of the game against Everton, as Spurs already face a must-win scenario to avoid relegation.

The Italian coach acknowledged Romero’s long-standing ties to Belgrano but reiterated that the player’s recovery and World Cup prospects were the priorities. Tottenham currently sit 17th in the Premier League, three points adrift of safety with one match remaining.

Everton, meanwhile, enter the game needing a point to secure their top-flight status, setting up a high-stakes clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Both teams are under intense pressure as the season reaches its conclusion.

Spurs have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, with De Zerbi’s side winning just one of their last five league matches. The defeat to Sunderland, where Romero was injured, remains a key factor in their current predicament.

Romero, a World Cup participant with Argentina, has been a pivotal figure for Spurs this season, marshaling their defense despite ongoing injury concerns. His absence adds further uncertainty to Tottenham’s defensive setup for the decisive fixture.

De Zerbi confirmed that other first-team players, including key squad members, remain available for selection. The manager faces a tactical challenge in balancing squad morale and immediate survival needs.

With relegation still mathematically possible, Tottenham’s players and staff will aim to deliver a performance that secures top-flight football next season. The game against Everton carries immense significance for both clubs.
