Chelsea’s youth overhaul: Van der Kraan’s promotion fuels new era

🇬🇧

Chelsea have confirmed that Dutchman Glenn van der Kraan will take over as the club’s Academy Director, a promotion that recognises the influence he has exerted since arriving in 2024 to reshape the youth set‑up at Chelsea across every age group.

Van der Kraan initially joined Chelsea as Academy Technical Director. In that role he forged a clear football identity by synchronising coaching methods, playing style and player development across every age group.

His influence helped the Under‑21 and U18 sides achieve historic league‑phase victories last season, each winning their respective competitions for the first time. Those triumphs marked a standout period for the academy.

Under his watch the pathway to senior football flourished, with ten academy graduates making their first‑team debuts. Several academy coaches also contributed directly to the senior squad.

Speaking after his appointment, Van der Kraan expressed pride and gratitude. “I am incredibly proud and honoured to take on the role of Academy Director at Chelsea after two thoroughly enjoyable years working with an amazing leadership team,” he said.

He added, “I want to thank the Sporting Directors and ownership for the faith they have shown in me and also to every single person in the academy who has played their part in making this development programme successful. This club has a proud history of developing talented players, and I am excited to help lead the next chapter.”

Chelsea are preparing for a new era under manager Xabi Alonso, and academy talents will hope to get a shot at senior football under the Spaniard. Van der Kraan has proven in previous jobs that he is not afraid to give young talent a chance to earn a first‑team spot. The club expects the integration of homegrown players to be a cornerstone of Alonso’s tactical approach.
