Burnley bank on Hayen Belgian expertise to chase promotion
Burnley have turned to Hayen Belgian expertise, signing 45‑year‑old Nicky Hayen on a three‑year contract to lead the relegated Clarets back to the Premier League. The appointment comes as the club prepares for life in the Championship after Scott Parker’s April departure.
Scott Parker left by mutual consent in April, leaving the Clarets without a head coach as they face the Championship challenge. Burnley’s board therefore moved quickly to fill the vacancy with a manager experienced at the top level.
Hayen’s three‑year deal gives him time to implement his ideas and aim for a swift return to the Premier League. He arrived after a successful season in Belgium, guiding Genk to a seventh‑placed finish in the top flight and previously securing a league title with Club Brugge.
Before his Belgian exploits, Hayen spent the 2021‑2022 season managing Welsh side Haverfordwest County, guiding the club to a respectable mid‑table finish. That spell in Wales added valuable experience of the Welsh football system.
Some fans and pundits argued that former Wales manager Craig Bellamy might have been a more fitting choice, but the Clarets have placed their confidence in Hayen. The appointment, confirmed by Getty Images], was welcomed by Clarets’ supporters eager for a promotion push.
