Courtois on Belgium’s late scare against New Zealand
Belgium secured their place in the next round of the 2026 World Cup with a commanding 1-5 win over New Zealand, while Egypt and Iran played out a draw. The result also confirmed the Red Devils as group winners.
Thibaut Courtois, Belgium’s goalkeeper, reflected on the performance after the match. He praised the team’s control but acknowledged a late defensive lapse that briefly threatened their group lead.
New Zealand pulled one back late to make it 1-3, prompting Courtois to criticise avoidable errors. "It was a stupid goal," he told Live. "They are dangerous on set pieces and we gave away too many corners at the end."
Courtois added that Belgium’s late goals restored calm. "We made it 4-1 and 5-1 quickly. That’s good, especially because it means less travel ahead." As group winners, Belgium will remain in Seattle for the Round of 16.

The goalkeeper also highlighted Belgium’s attacking threat. "New Zealand pressed high and played openly. That helped us get into our rhythm. Once the first goal went in, it was like a ketchup bottle: the rest followed." Courtois set a personal milestone, making his 18th World Cup finals appearance. No Belgian player has ever featured more times at the tournament. "It’s very special and there will be a 19th," he said. "Hopefully we can go as far as possible. It’s a tough World Cup with many surprises." Belgium’s Round of 16 clash is scheduled for next Wednesday, 1 July. The opponent will be determined by other group results and could be South Korea, Senegal, Algeria or Austria. The Red Devils’ next match will be played in Seattle, where they have already secured a base for the knockout stages.
