Arsenal clinch Premier League title after 22-year wait

Arsenal secured the Premier League crown on Tuesday evening, ending a 22‑year wait since the "Invincibles" era under Arsène Wenger. The North London club lifted the trophy for the first time since 2004.

After three consecutive seasons finishing as runners‑up, Arsenal finally broke the pattern and reclaimed the league title. The achievement erased a long spell of second‑place finishes.

The campaign was characterised by nervous periods, a high proportion of set‑piece goals and criticism of a defensive, low‑risk style. Many observers described the play as unattractive, noting that 28 goals came from corners, free kicks or penalties.

In the first half of the season Arsenal suffered two defeats and three draws, yet maintained a four‑point lead over Manchester City. After the turn of the year the lead narrowed to a single point as City remained close.

April brought setbacks with defeats in the League Cup, FA Cup and two Premier League losses, allowing City to overtake Arsenal on goal difference on 22 April. The setbacks revived fears of a repeat of previous seasons where City seized the title late.

Critics labelled Arteta’s side "boring" because more than forty percent of their goals originated from set pieces. The reliance on corners, free kicks and penalties reinforced that perception.

Arteta defended his approach, highlighting a solid defence that conceded only 26 goals and a possession style without a strong forward thrust. He argued that the plan was necessary to win the league.

The manager expressed his drive, saying "I'm on fire, I am so driven. This is brilliant. I see possibilities and I want to achieve them for all people. That drives me. I know no fear." He also noted continuous support from the club hierarchy, which allowed him time to build.

Key signings such as Declan Rice for a record €120 million in 2023, and summer arrivals Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyökeres and Noni Madueke refreshed the attack. These additions complemented the existing squad and contributed to the title charge.

Fans, relieved of a decade‑long trauma, accepted Arteta’s unconventional methods – from a lit lamp in the dressing room to the duck‑rabbit illusion – as part of the journey to the championship. The supporters celebrated the long‑awaited triumph.
